The Real Secret!

The successful performance of magic undoubtedly relies on one or more "secrets" (i.e. the method by which the magic effect is achieved).

However, the method is only one part of a much larger set of skills that need to be mastered. These include:

• acting, since the great Robert-Houdin once said that a magician is merely an actor playing the part of a magician, and you need to be convincing in all that you do and say
• communication, since you will need to use various different media to get your message across, and you may well spend a large part of your time talking to other people before, during and after your shows
• finance, such as costing and pricing, if you wish to make a living from magic
• marketing, as you need to make sure people know that you are available
• negotiating, which you will need when agreeing prices with prospective customers

as well as

• the ability to be entertaining!

So, the real secret of magic is that the secret (i.e. the method) is not actually that important (which doesn't, of course, mean that you should reveal the method to anybody)!
